Asset Health Scores and Scenario Analysis: Prioritizing Distribution Investments

Deciding which of thousands of assets to renew first on a limited budget means evaluating health scores, a risk summary and renewal, load flow, switch placement and master plan scenarios together, on the same data.

Every distribution utility's investment budget is smaller than the total cost of the assets that need renewing. The real question is therefore not "what should we renew?" but "what should we renew first, and what do we gain in return?" The answer often rests on experience, requests from regional offices and last year's fault list.

All of these inputs are valuable, but when they are disconnected they are hard to compare. A digital twin brings an asset's condition, its place in the network and the effect of possible interventions together on the same model, making prioritization easier to defend.

Scattered Data, Scattered Decisions

The story of a pole or a transformer is usually spread across several systems. Static data lives in the inventory, maintenance records in the work order system, network connectivity in the GIS topology and loading in the measurement system. For investment prioritization these pieces have to be stitched together by hand every time, which is slow and error-prone.

GeoEner Digital Twin makes that combination permanent. It does not build a new data model; it brings network inventory, maintenance and work order history, GIS topology and measurement data together on a single asset card through source adapters. The card shows static data, maintenance history, an event timeline and the health trend side by side.

Health Score: An Indicator Built from Maintenance History

The first step in prioritization is to make asset condition comparable. In GeoEner Digital Twin, the health score is calculated from an asset's maintenance history. Knowledge that already accumulates in the field — inspection findings and work orders — stops being a pile of records to read one by one and becomes an indicator.

The map is colored by health band, so you can see whether poor-condition assets cluster in one area or are spread along a particular feeder. The health trend on the asset card shows how condition changes over time. Feeding the measurement data already shown on the asset card into the score is on the roadmap; today's score is based on maintenance history.

Risk Summary: Catching Unplanned Risk

If a poor-condition asset is already in the maintenance plan, the problem is largely being managed. The real danger lies in assets that are risky but appear in no plan at all. The Risk Summary screen lists these separately and breaks them down by organization, province and district.

Feeder rankings can be exported to Excel, making them easy to share with regional teams or the investment committee. Outage impact analysis, meanwhile, traces the topology to find which assets would be affected if a given asset went out of service. Together, these show both how poor an asset's condition is and how wide an area it would affect if it failed.

Renewal Scenarios: Seeing the Cost

A prioritized list is incomplete until it is compared with the budget. In the Scenario screen, renewing critical assets is costed with unit prices and budget usage is tracked. Planners can add and remove sets of assets to see how far a given budget will go.

This moves the investment discussion from an abstract "urgent needs" list to a concrete comparison of cost and scope.

Load Flow: Calculating the Electrical Impact

An asset's electrical loading matters as much as its physical condition. GeoEner Digital Twin's pandapower-based load flow service calculates transformer loading, voltage and losses, and results can be validated against measurements. Feeders with insufficient data are not quietly dropped; they are set aside with the reason.

That last point matters in practice: a result produced from incomplete data can be more misleading than no result at all. Knowing which feeder could not be calculated, and why, also shows where data improvement work should start.

Switch Placement and Master Plan: The Long View

Not every investment is an asset renewal. A switching device placed at the right point can narrow the area affected by a fault. Switch Placement Optimization ranks the points that would most reduce customer-hour and energy-not-supplied losses and runs a before/after simulation, so the expected effect of a switch investment is visible before the decision.

The Grid Master Plan looks further ahead. It produces load projections from population and demand data, detects bottlenecks and generates project proposals. Switch placement and master plan outputs become investment requests, narrowing the gap between analysis and the budgeting process.

Conclusion: Set Your Investment Priorities with GeoEner Digital Twin

GeoEner Digital Twin brings asset condition, network topology and scenario analysis together on existing GeoEner data. A health score calculated from maintenance history, a risk summary that isolates unplanned risk, unit-price renewal scenarios, load flow that can be validated against measurements, switch placement optimization and a grid master plan all run on the same twin.

The result is an investment process that can show which asset should be renewed first and why, together with cost and impact. If you would like to work through a prioritization scenario for your own network, get in touch and we will set up a demo using your own data.
